Last week, Cancer Action presented its Volunteer of the Year Award to an Independence, MO woman who during the past 16 years has volunteered 15,211 hours of her time to the Kansas City area nonprofit organization. That’s nearly two full years of those 16 years.
Without even hearing the details, those numbers speak volumes about this person’s commitment to helping those in need, as did the fact that 750 people collectively volunteered 64,147 hours of their time to Cancer Action last year.
When you lead a business, team or organization there will be times when using numbers to express your message will be more powerful than words alone. Think about the many ways you can quantify accomplishments, changes and progress and at your business or organization.
Cancer Action used numbers very effectively at its luncheon, and will use those in its newsletter and other communications materials. Here’s more of what they reported about last year:
- 1,419 volunteer hours were provided to drive cancer patients to and from their life saving medical treatments and doctor appointments.
- 20,139 miles were driven transporting clients to and from treatments and appointments.
- 99 hours were given to inform and educate people about Cancer Action at community health fairs.
- Volunteers helped provide over 15,010 comfort items including afghans, neck pillows, gowns, bed pads and bed sheets.
- 60,157 cans of nutritional supplements were provided to 1,328 cancer patients to help them maintain their weight and energy.
- Cancer Action served 3,803 cancer patients and their families in 2009.
Cancer Action has offices in Kansas City, KS; Overland Park, KS; and in Independence, MO. Known as The Heart of Cancer Support in Kansas City, the organization is dedicated to reducing distress and improving the quality of life for those living with, through and beyond cancer. Its work includes promoting education, prevention and early detection to help reduce the impact of cancer in the greater Kansas City area.
And, by the way, Cancer Action:
- Provided its clients nearly 43,500 medical supplies last year.
- Provided 612 wigs and 2,074 hats, scarves and turbans to women coping with hair loss.
- Received 98 hours of volunteer time from students who helped with bulk mailings and other office related services.
